Rare Dapedium politum Fossil Fish Jurassic Lyme Regis Dorset UK – Lower Lias Black Ven Marls Specimen with Hand Signed Certificate

$66.06 $89.84
Description Rare Dapedium politum Fossil Fish from the Jurassic Coast of Lyme Regis This genuine Dapedium politum fossil fish originates from the Black Ven Marls of the Lower Lias Formation at Black Ven, Lyme Regis, Dorset, United Kingdom, part of the internationally renowned Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating to the Early Jurassic Period approximately 200–190 million years ago, this fossil represents a beautifully preserved member of an extinct group of early ray-finned fishes that thrived in the ancient seas covering southern Britain. The Black Ven cliffs near Lyme Regis are among the most famous fossil localities in the world and have produced extraordinary marine fossils for more than two centuries. Fossils from this site include marine reptiles, ammonites, belemnites, crustaceans, and a variety of fossil fish including the distinctive Dapedium. The specimen shown in the photographs is the exact fossil you will receive, carefully selected for its preservation and scientific interest. This fossil includes a fully hand-signed Premium Certificate of Authenticity, confirming that the specimen is a genuine fossil. Please refer to the photographs for full specimen sizing and scale. About Dapedium politum – An Armoured Jurassic Fish Dapedium politum belongs to an extinct group of primitive ray-finned fishes that lived during the Jurassic Period. These fish were well adapted to marine environments and are recognised for their distinctive deep-bodied shape and heavy armour-like scales. Taxonomic classification: Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Actinopterygii Order: Dapediiformes Family: Dapediidae Genus: Dapedium Species: Dapedium politum The genus Dapedium was first described in the early 19th century by the Swiss naturalist Louis Agassiz, whose pioneering work on fossil fish laid the foundations of modern palaeoichthyology. Dapedium species were relatively slow-swimming fish with strong jaws and crushing teeth adapted for feeding on hard-shelled marine invertebrates such as molluscs and crustaceans. Their thick scales formed a protective armour that helped defend them from larger marine predators inhabiting the Jurassic seas. Geological Context – The Lower Lias and Black Ven Marls This fossil originates from the Black Ven Marls, part of the Lower Lias Formation exposed along the Dorset coast between Lyme Regis and Charmouth. These sediments were deposited during the Early Jurassic Hettangian to Sinemurian stages in a shallow marine environment. At the time, southern Britain lay beneath a warm epicontinental sea, where fine muds accumulated on the seabed. These sediments later hardened into shale and marl layers that now form the famous fossil-bearing cliffs of the Jurassic Coast. The Lower Lias marine ecosystem included a diverse range of organisms such as: Marine reptiles including ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs Ammonites and belemnites Crustaceans and molluscs Various species of fossil fish including Dapedium The relatively calm depositional environment allowed many organisms to be buried rapidly after death, helping preserve delicate skeletal structures in exceptional detail. Morphology and Characteristics of Dapedium Fossils Dapedium politum is recognised for its distinctive deep, rounded body shape and its heavy covering of thick rhomboid scales. These scales were composed of a hard enamel-like material known as ganoine, giving the fish a strong protective armour. Characteristic features of Dapedium include: A deep, disk-like body shape Thick rhomboidal scales forming a protective armour Strong jaws adapted for crushing prey A relatively small tail fin compared with modern fish Robust skeletal elements often preserved in fossils These fish likely lived near the seafloor or within shallow marine environments, feeding on shellfish and other benthic organisms. Their armoured bodies provided protection against predators such as larger fish and marine reptiles. The preservation of fossil fish from the Black Ven Marls often captures fine anatomical details, allowing palaeontologists to study the evolution of early ray-finned fishes during the Jurassic. A Genuine Jurassic Coast Fossil with Premium Certificate This specimen represents a genuine fossil fish from one of the most famous fossil sites in the world. Fossils from the Lyme Regis area have played a crucial role in the development of palaeontology and continue to be highly prized by collectors. Key features of this fossil include: Genuine Dapedium politum fossil fish Rare specimen from the Jurassic Coast Geological formation: Black Ven Marls, Lower Lias Age: Early Jurassic Period Locality: Black Ven, Lyme Regis, Dorset, United Kingdom Characteristic armoured fish morphology The exact specimen shown in the photographs Includes a fully hand-signed Premium Certificate of Authenticity This fossil preserves the remains of a distinctive armoured fish that lived in the ancient Jurassic seas nearly 200 million years ago, offering collectors a remarkable and authentic specimen from one of Britain’s most celebrated fossil localities.
